So, here we go! July workshops unwind.

A total surprise creative session for Natural Printing newcomers.

Having taken it slowly we ended up with expanding quantity of raving natural mono prints.

As the number of the resulting printed pages grew, so was the general enthusiasm about learning more and immersing deeper into the Natural Dyeing process.

Next take will be introduction of Direct Contact Extraction on silk and polyamide. We are starting this coming Thursday, July 20. Come join!

New Studio is Open! Workshop on November 5, and more. Мастеркласс 5 ноября в новой мастерской

New studio on the Baltic Sea is all set up and working! I have just made a FB page for it to reflect what’s going on there, as my new project is also a gallery. The name is Creative Cultural House Szary Ganek “Szary ganek” means “a grey veranda” which is a peculiar detail of this place, located in the historical old part of the town. And I should credit my friend Monika Goralska for finding such a speaking name for the place. Check out her site, she is a skillful felter with great style.

So, I am starting a series of practical classes on my techniques, more like a school. The general schedule is on the way. The idea of the program is to go from easy things to more complicated and complex. This approach will help to build confidence for the beginners and enhance practical skills of those already practicing dyeing and painting.

On November 5, I will teach Natural Monoprint on Paper, Class 1 

Fresh and dry botanical materials can definitely create some drama on watercolor and hand crafted heavy weight paper. Printing on paper with leaves via Contact Dyeing technique is much easier than same technique on fabric, and requires very little to zero knowledge of the material to create beautiful results. All it takes is to follow your instructor provided she/he knows what to do 🙂 and you will be able to replicate the procedure and get the same fine results on your own. Contact Dyeing on paper is also a great way to get introduction to general natural dyeing and printing and Slow Fashion concept.

Students bring:

• their paper, any type from cheapest to watercolour and handmade paper;
• windfall leaves selection of their choice

The same class will be held on November 11. Same time, same place.

 

On November 12, I will teach Class 2: Natural Monoprint and Mixed Media, Creating Artist Cards. The concept of developing random natural prints on paper into a complete art work I described here.

Students bring:

• dry natural prints on paper from Class 1;
• pens, metallic markers, markers for calligraphy;
• painting knifes, flat brushes synthetic sizes small to medium;
• black ink, white, red acrylic paint;
• acrylic paints in colors of own choice

Моя новая мастерская на Балтийском море пущена в эксплуатацию! Вот новая страничка в фейсбуке о мастерской-галерее Creative Cultural House Szary Ganek “Szary ganek” означает “серая веранда”, это меткое название подсказала мне Monika Goralska замечательная мастерица валяния с хорошим стилем. Название метко указывает на архитектурную особенность дома в исторической части города, где и располагается мастерская.

Итак, я начинаю серию мастер классов по моим техникам, своеобразную школу. Общая идея программы – продвигаться от простого к сложному, что позволит начинающим наработать уверенность, а тем, кто уже практикует техники крашения и рисования, приобрести дополнительные полезные навыки.

5 ноября состоится мастеркласс  по Натуральному монопринту на бумаге. Занятие 1-е.

Сухой и свеже собранный растительный материал прекрасно работает на различных типах бумаги в технике контактного крашения. При этом для отличных результатов не требуется никаких предварительных специальных знаний. Если повторять все то же самое, что выполняет инструктор на занятии, то результаты гарантированы и легко воспроизводимы при самостоятельной работе. Контактное крашение на бумаге – отличное введение в тему натурального крашения и Slow Fashion в целом.

Необходимо принести:

• бумага для рисования любого сорта, от самой дешевой до акварельной и черпанной;
• листья осенние на свой выбор

12 ноября состоится мастеркласс, развивающий тему монопринта, Занятие 2-е: натуральный монопринт и смешанная техника на бумаге. Миниатюры. Идея создания на основе случайных натуральных отпечатков законченного художественного произведения изложена здесь

Необходимо принести:

• сухие натуральные принты на бумаге с предыдущего занятия;
• ручки, маркеры металлик, контуры, маркеры для каллиграфии;
• мастихины, синтетические кисти плоские, малый и средний размер;
• черную тушь, белую и красную акриловую краску;
•  акриловые краски цвета на свой выбор

Natural Monoprints on Paper. Натуральный монопринт на акварельной бумаге.

Natural print on paper itself  remains a random trace of chemical process, unless being subjected to artistic conception.

No doubt, that a vivid imprint on concrete pavement, metal, paper, etc. made by Nature, can still awaken a lively imagination. However, it should be yet reframed, before it is expanded into a work of art.

So, when you have mastered your natural printing skills to the level of a distinct and live-looking results on paper, you are free to improvise.

What I did, I decided to make my prints into pages of some forgotten diary, and stress out what the leaves’ imprints most of all associate with, it is the time flow…

So, I added acrylic paints and inks, used some calligraphy writing…

I figured out the most appropriate, to my mind, way to apply paints and inks.

And what I got in the result was really rewarding! I thoroughly revised the whole process, and now I believe, I’ve come up with a new topic for my practical classes))

So, when you have learnt really well how to print with leaves on paper, and you wonder “what’s next?” – maybe you would like to try adding imagery to your prints with my mixed techniques approach 😉

I will include this topic in my new program for the coming workshops, and for the practical classes in my new art space, when it is ready!

Работая в обычной технике натурального монопринта на акварельной бумаге, я захотела выйти за рамки обычно принятого подхода, и добавить образности с помощью смешанной техники. Сам по себе натуральный монопринт является так или иначе результатом химических процессов, заданных умелым исполнителем. И скорее всего, может выступать фоном для дальнейшего переосмысления и создания образа. В той же степени случайный отпечаток осенней листвы на бетонной дорожке или замысловатые фактуры следов окисления на металлической поверхности требуют образного переосмысления прежде, чем могли бы быть названы художественным произведением.

Так я решила сделать серию работ “Страницы из забытого дневника”, следуя тем ассоциациям, которые больше всего вызывают случайно оставленные отпечатки осенней листвы: быстротечность времени…

Я использовала акриловые краски, тушь и ручку. Работа с фоном оказалась интересной, и в результате я определила наиболее удачную последовательность применения материалов. На мой взгляд, сложилась любопытная техника преобразования натурального принта на бумаге в законченную художественную работу.

Таким образом, если вы уже овладели техникой создания контактных отпечатков листьев растений на бумаге, и задались вопросом, в каком направлении двигаться дальше, возможно вы захотите освоить такой вариант смешанной техники 😉

 

 

 

 

 

A Brief Complement to the Last Post

 

My rather chaotic approach to the Natural Printing on Paper has resulted mostly in somewhat watery ghost images on the paper though nicely colored, at least to my mind, due to the presence of different metal scraps in the pile, as I assume…

 

As I was enjoying my dear FB friend Betty Eilat’s Experiments on Paper  album the other day, I realized a couple of things and got an idea,

(which I was unable to conclude based on my own practical results due to the lack of those regarding Paper! Credits to Betty Eilat!)

• The prints created via steaming and simmering differ;
• The difference is watery/blurry vs graphic/well-defined images;
• The blurry print could make a great background to print over a more defined one!

Right here I have to stop and declare, that I am fully aware of the possibility that somewhere someone has learnt this phenomenon long time before me; he/she may have been successfully using this approach, etc. By dwelling upon this topic I by no means am aspiring to be a discoverer! I am just committing to paper the sequence of my working process in this Field, so to say…

 

 

So, back to the subject.

1. I took one of my dyed papers with no vivid imprints;
2. took a few presoaked leaves;
3. a steam iron;
4. and a paper towel.

I iron-steamed the sandwich for a few seconds and got quite satisfactory results as for such a short period of steaming time .

? What if  it were  the real steaming! Wow!

It is just sometimes you spend so much time and effort on setting up some experiment only to  find yourself desperately disappointed with the outcome, realizing  that the approach has no prospects what so ever, so when a test as small  as this all of sudden yields  some promising results, it is really worth sharing it with whoever shares the same interests!! I think so .

One sunny afternoon as a most spontaneous experimenter, I got down to the contact printing on paper out of sheer curiosity without having done neither any preparation of the materials, nor study of what the other knowledgeable people were doing about the natural printing on paper.

..I set up this experiment in between my housekeeping activities..

I just bothered to pour boiling water over some dried euca, all the rest of the leaves were freshly fallen from the tree, so to say. And I got some found objects, as metal scraps and a piece of the lace which I found somewhere in the house.

Had to cut the paper, too!

 

Был солнечный полдень, и, как всегда, спонтанно я подошла к пробной контактной печати на бумаге.

Мое любопытство и непреодолимое желание скорейших результатов не оставили мне шанса ни подготовить необходимые материалы, ни вдумчиво изучить, что и как знающие люди делают в отношении эко принта на бумаге. 

И вообще, эксперимент пришлось ставить в промежутке между хоз. мероприятиями… 

Листья, сухие эвк. и свежие из-под ближайших деревьев, я залила кипятком; собрала по дому некоторые предметы: металлические кусочки, обрезки кружева.

Ну и бумагу нарезала, тоже…

 

Now, for what could have been done, and yet neglected,

• Presoaking paper part;
• Pressing the leaves flat for a few days prior to printing;

 

Теперь о том, что следовало бы сделать, однако это было упущено.

• Замочить бумагу предварительно
• Поместить все листья под пресс за несколько дней до эксперимента

 

And what is more crying,

• The paper stack was not steamed

It was boiled in water..

..a paper at the bottom got sort of burnt:

 

 

Более вопиющие факты:

• Стопку бумаги я не пропарила,

Я ее кипятила в воде!

ну да, нижний лист подгорел…

The last two photos show the whole arrangement with the weight (a saucepan full of water) on top, and the revealed view of the papers in water as the weight has been removed.

This is it, the story of one lazy eco printing on paper!

 

 

На последних двух фото изображена вся аранжировка с грузом сверху (казанок с водой)

и вид после того, как груз убран.

Такие вот ленивые вареники!

Вернее, ленивая контактная эко печать на бумаге…
